Education and Training

Lifelong learning has been adopted by the European Union as a key concept for the period 2007-2013. Following a period of quantitative expansion encompassing new education infrastructure, emphasis for lending to Education and Training will be given to improving the quality of education on offer in the EU.

i2i supports investment in education and training by financing learning interventions:

  • Throughout the education life cycle:

The Bank can support pre-school interventions, kindergartens, primary and secondary schools, technical and vocational education, higher education and universities, distance education and adult education for senior citizens.

  • Education in all settings:

As well as lending to formal educational institutions, the Bank supports organised learning interventions in other life settings, notably the workplace and the wider community, i.e. youth apprenticeship training and active labour market programmes for at-risk adults, human resource development programmes in business enterprises, Internet-based learning platforms, and media and broadcasting programming with an educative orientation.

  • Tangibles and Intangibles:

As well as investment in buildings and equipment, but the Bank also supports intangible educational investment, including appropriate skill development for teachers and trainers, support for demand-side initiatives such as student loans, and support for transfer of knowledge from Higher Education Institutions to the community and business sectors (Science Parks, Incubators, etc).
