EU energy policy and the EIB
The promotion of sustainable, competitive and secure sources of energy is a key policy objective of the European Union. For this reason, the European Investment Bank has also made lending to support Europe’s energy objectives a top priority.
Sustainable, Competitive & Secure Energy
Energy is at the top of the EU policy agenda, in relation to:
- security of supply
- climate change considerations
- competitiveness
Energy financing is one of the EIB strategic lending priorities both inside and outside the EU (Corporate operational Plan (COP) 2007-2009).
Priority areas
The EIB has reinforced its financing in five priority areas:
EIB Energy targets
The EIB’s quantified lending targets in the energy sector are:
- Global annual lending in the order of EUR 4bn for projects belonging to at least one of the five priority areas
- Annual sub-target of EUR 600m-800m for renewable energy projects and a relative target of 50% of EIB lending to electricity generation associated with renewable energy technologies.
Value added in energy related projects, will include:
- Innovative financial instruments and structures
- Technical assistance contributions, in cooperation with the Commission and other International Financial Institutions
