EIB bond issues in PLN

EIB PLN issuance started in 1997 when the currency was not fully convertible and all payments in relation to these synthetic PLN bonds had to be made in foreign currency. When the Zloty became fully convertible at the end of 2000, the EIB continued to issue PLN bonds in the international markets. These were mainly targeted at international investors, which were attracted by the opportunity to purchase PLN paper with the assurance of EIB credit.

The scope for PLN issuance was further augmented at the end of 2001, when the PLN Domestic Debt Issuance Programme was established. Within just three months of its signing, more than twice as much EIB PLN paper was issued than had been during the preceding 12 months.

The initial surge of demand was followed by a steady stream of Polish issuance. In 2004, EIB PLN issuance accounted for 940 million Zlotys. This paper has proved particularly appealing to domestic institutional investors, such as insurance companies and pension funds, which appreciate the diversity EIB PLN paper can add to their portfolio while retaining the excellent credit standard implicit in EIB bonds. By end 2007, EIB had issued a total of PLN 3.9 billion.
