On Thursday 19th and Friday 20th October 2006, the European Investment Bank will hold its annual Forum in Athens (Hotel Grande Bretagne) on South-East Europe - A region on the move.
The conference is designed to bring together representatives from the government, banks and financial institutions, as well as the international media. Participation upon invitation only.
Through keynote speeches and interactive panel discussions the Forum will provide a unique opportunity to meet with and hear from policy makers, leading representatives from Members of the Greek Government and of other Governments of countries in the Region, prominent academics and leading representatives of the European business and banking world.
Building on the great success of previous Fora, this conference will bring together some 400 representatives from government and political circles, business and banking sectors, as well as the international media, to create an interactive forum for discussion and debate of the pertinent issues facing the region.
The 2006 EIB Forum will look into how political and economic integration in the region may be strengthened in order to enjoy stability and growth, democracy and prosperity. It will also discuss the best ways for the EU to provide a new momentum to this process, and the role political leaders and business communities in the region must play to lead the way towards regional cooperation and European integration. Trade and efficient infrastructure networks being the key to the region's economic dynamism, speakers will highlight the role of the public and private sector in fostering infrastructure facilities, promoting cross-border investment and developing services, including access to finance for public and private entrepreneurship.
The Forum will be opened by Georgios Alogoskoufis, Minister of Finance. Other confirmed speakers include Enlargement Commissioner Olli Rehn, Members of the Greek Government and of other Governments of countries in the Region, prominent academics and leading representatives of the European business and banking world.
The 2004 enlargement has been an historic opportunity for Europe, greatly contributing to peace, democracy and prosperity in the continent as a whole. The forthcoming EU membership of Bulgaria and Romania is set to further strengthen and promote Europe's common project. In the meantime, accession negotiations are under way for Turkey and Croatia, while the EU's commitment to the other countries of the Western Balkans has been firmly renewed. By focusing on the region, we underline the importance of successful integration for South-East Europe, achieving the shared goals of the Union.
