Since its inception in 1956 CEB has helped to finance social projects and responded to emergency situations thereby contributing to the improvement of living conditions in the least privileged regions of Europe. Its key mission is to contribute to strengthening social cohesion in Europe. As an institution subjected to the authority of the Council of Europe, operations and activities must be carried out in accordance with the relevant Council of Europe conventions.
CEB ensures that projects to be financed comply with a set of social and environmental criteria and ensure that the socio-economic as well as possible environmental impacts have been taken into consideration and have been mitigated.
As CEB funds projects in EU-Member states, EU Accession and Association Countries, all activities are strictly subjected to the Council of Europe Conventions, which includes EU environment policy, regulations and standards. In addition the projects must respect the environment on the basis of relevant international conventions and compliance with standards of quality[1].
