Between 1979 and 1998: Held a number of posts at HM Treasury, including: senior economist on monetary policy and responsible for the Bank of England Act (1998) which gave the Bank monetary policy independence; Deputy press secretary to the Chancellor of the Exchequer
Between 1989 to 1993: Seconded to the New Zealand Treasury with responsibility for macroeconomic monitoring and forecasting and monetary policy
Until 1989: Held a range of positions as an economist in the UK Department of Employment
