Since 2005 the EIB has supported the activity of Transparency International (TI) as the leading international NGO combating corruption at a global level.
The Bank has co-financed TI's National Integrity System (NIS) Assessments for 7 countries in Southern Africa in 2006/7 and is currently supporting the NIS Assessment for another African country. The operational benefit for the EIB lies in the provision of useful background information for due diligence processes. In the longer-term, actions that reinforce trends to reduce corruption and develop policies to fight fraud will contribute to general development objectives and improve the environment in which the EIB works. The Bank also sponsored the 2008 Annual Global Corruption Report of TI.
TI itself has actively participated in the Bank's public consultations on its Anti-Fraud and Anti-Corruption Policy (2007) and Statement of Environmental and Social Principles and Standards (2008).
